6. What are the stages of Renal Cell Carcinoma/ Kidney Cancer?
There are different stages of kidney cancer, the prognosis depends upon your general health and grade of the cancer. The higher the stage, the more advanced the renal cancer. The following are the stages of kidney cancer-
- Stage I – The size of the tumor will be 7 centimeters or smaller that is only in the kidney.
- Stage II – The size of the tumor will be larger than 7 centimeters that is only in the kidney.
- Stage III – A tumor that is in the kidney or kidney’s main blood vessel or in the fatty tissue around the kidney and may also be in nearby lymph node.
- Stage IV – Cancer may spread to other organs, such as the pancreas, bowels or lungs and also spread beyond the fatty layer of tissue around the kidney, and it may also be in nearby lymph nodes.
7. What is the treatments for Kidney Cancer and does it requires transplantation?
Once confirmed that you have been diagnosed and you know the stage of Renal cancer, you can plan the treatment with doctor, doctor may refer a specific surgery or refer you to a specialist for the treatment. At present, there are several standard types of treatment available for kidney cancer. In most of the cases, surgery is the first step that is required depending on the stage or grade of the kidney cancer.
These are the types of surgery required for kidney cancer, depends on how advanced your cancer is-
- Radical Nephrectomy – This is the most common type of surgery for kidney cancer in which the surgeons removes the kidney, surrounding tissue, adrenal glan and also often removes lymph nodes.
- Simple Nephrectomy – In which the surgeons removes the kidney only.
- Partial Nephrectomy – The surgery in which the cancer from the kidney is removed along with some tissue around the kidney.
You can survive with just one kidney as long as it is still working and if the surgeon removes both kidney(kidneys not working ), you will need a Dialysis or a Kidney Transplant Surgery
If surgery can’t help in removing your kidney cancer then doctor may suggest another option to help destroy the tumor.
- Cryotherapy – The extreme cold to kill the tumor.
- Radiofrequency – This option uses high-energy radio waves to cook the tumor.
- Arterial Embolization – It involves inserting material into an artery that leads to the kidney.
