Surgical Oncology refers to the treatment of cancer by removing or treating the diseased part with either minor or major operation. Several factors have led to the recent increase in the development in Surgical Oncology and to the organization of separate sections of Surgical Oncology.

This enthusiasm derives from the recognition that modern Oncologist management requires levels of expertise in Cancer Surgery, Chemotherapy that are not common to most general surgery. Modern Oncology management requires levels of expertise in Cancer Surgery, Chemotherapy, and Radiotherapy. Surgical oncologist can provide unique surgical expertise in surgical cases unfamiliar to general surgeons.

The Objectives of the Surgical Oncology department are the following:

  • Cure or palliate and improve quality of life emphasizing on multimodal treatment.
  • Practice evidence based medicine.
  • To achieve minimal morbidity and near zero mortality which is acceptable by any international norms.
  • Good preoperative preparation, careful preoperative monitoring, postoperative care.

The faculty of Surgical Oncology consists of thirteen Senior Consultants in various subspecialties, one Associate Consultant, two Clinical Assistant and Residents to each oncosurgical unit.

Unique features Surgical Oncology department

The Surgical Oncologist provides quality of care with intent of cure or palliation keeping in mind patient's interest topmost. Surgeons routinely perform radical operation like Radical cholecystectomy, Whippl'e pancreaticoduodenectomy, Gastric pull up, Craniofacial, resections, Conservative laryngeal surgery, Radical prostatectomy, Neobladder, retroperoneal nodal dissection and Pulmonary resection. Etc.

Surgical Oncology faculty emphasis an "Evidence based medicine" and multimodal treatment. Surgical Oncologist plays a leading role in treatment planning, and coordinating with other departments to provide the best to the patient.
